Programming a new car key for the first time registers the key's transponder code with the vehicle's immobilizer memory. This process is called "adding a key" or "key learning." The immobilizer stores the new key's identifier alongside any existing keys.
First-time programming is simpler and cheaper than all-keys-lost programming because the vehicle already has at least one working key in its memory. The existing key authenticates the programming session, allowing the new key to be added without bypassing security.
Most vehicles can store 4-8 key identifiers. Each new key takes a slot. We can check how many keys are currently programmed to your vehicle and how many slots remain. If all slots are full, we can erase one to make room.
1. The vehicle must be present. 2. An existing working key (for first-time/add-a-key programming). 3. The new key blank (we supply, or you can provide your own). 4. Proof of vehicle ownership if you do not have an existing key.
